There are just a handful of baby products we consider to be game changers since we became parents, and a hook on highchair is one of them (our kiddie hiking carrier, off-road stroller, and lightweight travel system also top our list of must haves!).
Ours goes everywhere with us – on vacation, to restaurants that only have high-top tables (okay, to bars… don’t judge), to friends’ houses for dinner, EVERYWHERE. It folds flat into a carrier bag that I can throw over my shoulder, or toss into the bottom of my suitcase.

Hook On High Chair vs. Standard High Chair
The best feature about hook on vs. standard high chairs is their space-saving nature. If you want the best high chair for small spaces, look no further than this guide! A hook on high chair is also the best space saver high chair.
Hook on high chairs are also much more portable than standard high chairs. No more worrying about restaurants running out of high chairs, asking family to source one when we fly in for a visit, or awkward balancing-act feedings when we’re staying at hotels. (If you’re looking for a great baby travel gift for new parents, this is it.)
That said, there are cons, too. Hook-on high chairs – also known as clip on, clamp on, and hanging high chairs – have lower weight limits than standard floor high chairs. Average weight limits are ~35 pounds vs. a standard high chair’s average limit of 40+ pounds.
And these days, many standard high chairs are convertible – as in, they convert to a booster – making weight limits even higher – well in excess of 50 pounds.
Hook ons also don’t fit on all tables. Ours mostly worked for us, but not always. The clamps may not fit over a table top that’s super thick or has a large lip. Even so, the portable nature of a clip-on chair makes it more useful in diverse situations than a standard high chair.
What Do You Need in a Hook On Highchair?
Safety Features
Look for a multi-point safety harness – 3-point safety harnesses are good, 5-point ones are even better! Some models secure waist and legs, which is typically all you need, but if you feel more comfortable, some models also include shoulder straps.
Designs that clip onto tables, then also twist to tighten, provide an extra layer of security, as they’re less likely to slip off the countertop. Rubber arms also provide extra grip.
Size/Weight Limits
Probably goes without saying, but look for a model with the highest age/weight limit, so you can use it longer (most are made to hold babies well over 30 pounds). That said, adhere to those limits. Don’t use it once your kid has outgrown it, according to the manufacturers specs.
Look for a foldable high chair that’s as lightweight as possible, given the features you’re after. They run the gammut between 2 to 10 pounds (a huge difference!), so keep that in mind when making your comparisons.
Ease of Use
Ease of use is a must with a clip on highchair, especially if it you’re using it as a portable high chair. Look for ones with quick assembly/disassembly, storage and cleaning.
A foldable high chair (not all are) that folds small enough to carry around easily (preferably in an included carrying case), then clips on quickly with minimal fenagling, is the way to go.
Our hook on chair folded flat and stood on its side against the wall in our coat closet, took up minimal space, and was easy to grab on our way out the door. There was enough room in the bag that we could also throw in other essentials, like diapers and wipes, so we didn’t have to carry a separate diaper bag.
Detachable, machine-washable fabric is as easy as it gets! Spot-clean-only models are… okay… but we’re talking about babies, here. They’re messy! And it’s inevitable that their messes reach every nook and cranny of every baby item they use.
That said, the vast majority of fabric high chairs out there recommend hand-washing or spot-cleaning (uhhhhh… sorry… no!), even if the cover is removable. I’m not convinced that qualifies as easy-to-clean, but I couldn’t make “machine washable” a limiting factor in this high chair guide, or else I’d only be able to recommend… like… 2 chairs.
Comfort
Keep comfort in mind, because the longer baby is comfy, the longer he’ll tolerate sitting in the chair. Many have features to promote comfort, but be sure to look closely at the specs. Something with good back support and sufficient padding around the legs/butt are two things to consider.
Inclusions
Most foldable high chairs come with a carrying case (I honestly would be hard-pressed to consider one without an included case). Some also come with food trays or place mats, and others have those extras sold separately. Most also come with a warranty of at least a year.
Color/Design
I personally can’t stand gender-specific colors and gaudy kiddie designs (bright pinks and baby blues just ain’t my thang, y’all!). If you’re like me, you’ll be happy to know that most of my recommendations come in solid and/or gender-neutral colors and contemporary designs.
Extra Features
Some use waterproofed fabric that is made for indoor/outdoor use, a nice-to-have if you do a lot of camping, picnicking or al fresco dining with your baby.
Some models also have storage pockets for easy access to small items like wipes, toys, or anything you might need to keep your baby happy while dining.
Look for ones that attach to thick tables – this is the biggest limiting factor with these types of high chairs.
Note that no hook on highchairs are suitable to use on glass table-tops, round table-tops, table-tops with beveled edges, table-tops that are loose from their base, table leaves, single-pedestal tables, or folding tables (card tables, camping tables, etc.).

Guzzie+Guss Perch High Chair
Biggest pro: fits the widest range of table thicknesses, with the ability to attach to table-tops between 0.6” and 3.75” thick (note that it won’t be able to go over tables lips any thicker than that).
I can also personally recommend it, because it’s the one we use – and loooooove. Most other consumers do, too. The Perch consistently gets 4+ star reviews across multiple review sites.
The sliding clamps are super easy to use, with a twist-to-tighten feature that makes the attachment points extra secure. The 5-point harness keeps babies up to 37 pounds very secure while in-use.
It’s got a super high backrest and padding around the front, so baby doesn’t bump into any hard table edges. The fabric cover is removable, easy to clean, and will stand up to repeated machine washings (we know because we washed the hell out of it!).
It comes with its’ own carrying case and rubber, non-slide place mat. We recommend this product to all new parents!

TCBunny Table High Chair
Biggest pro: easiest to clean. The fabric is waterproof, so will resist letting spills soak in, and is labeled as both hand-washable (but why would you?!) and machine-washable! (Note that most other chairs on the market are labeled hand-wash only.)
With hundreds of 4- and 5-star reviews, this is a solid option. It’s advertised for both indoor and outdoor use, from fine-dining to camping, so it’s versatile enough for any dining situation. And its denim, so you know the fabric will hold up well, both to constant spills and to constant machine-washing.
It’s 5-point safety harness is designed to hold kids up to 37 pounds, its clamps are covered in non-slip rubber, and it boasts a comfy cushion and good back support. It fits tables thicknesses between 0.8″ to 3.3″.
The best thing going for it is its portability. This clip-on chair is compact, super light (at barely over 4 pounds), and folds into an included carrying case, so it travels very easily.
I loooooove that this one has a carrying case sewn right into the seat! No need to give me an excuse to lose it, amirite? It also has a storage pocket on the back. You can store small toys, pacis, etc for easy access.

Mountain Buggy Pod High Chair
Biggest pro: the lightest and most compact high chair of them all. At just 2.2 pounds, it also folds flat for ease of storage or travel.
The Mountain Buggy gets consistent 4+ stars across several review sites. This company’s focus is all-terrain baby gear, so is especially popular among outdoorsy parents.
These chairs are meant to be used both indoors and out, and can take a beating, y’all (and, let’s be honest, our kids are usually up for the challenge)! They’re also designed to be ergonomic, with a deep seat for baby’s comfort.
The non-slip rubber clamps tighten with the use of a vice grip, making it super secure, and it’s meant to hold babes up to 33 pounds. Interestingly, it only uses a 2-point over-the-shoulder harness system, because the leg straps are built into the leg holes. That doesn’t seem to bother the vast majority of consumers, though.
While the fabric cover can be zipped off for easy cleaning, it’s only recommended for hand-washing. And, though it’s the most compact chair on the list, it’s also the most limiting. It fits the smallest range of table-top thicknesses, only clipping to tables between 0.71″ and 1.8″.
This one does include a carrying case, and a recyclable one at that (swoon)!

Inglesina Fast Table Chair
Biggest pro: attached carrying bag (so you’ll never lose it!), and accessory pocket.
This one receives consistent 4.5+ reviews. It fits table-tops up to 3.5” thick, is made to hold up to 37 pounds, and has twist-to-tighten non-slip clamps.
With a 3-point harness system, it’s safe for baby. The seat cover detaches for easy cleaning, but again, it’s recommended only for hand-washing.
One cool baby-friendly feature is that the cover also snaps around the attachment clamps, so baby’s legs don’t have to touch the cold metal.
A couple more features make this chair extra mom- (and dad!-) friendly – an attached carrying case, and an accessory pocket on the back. I love that I’d never lose the carry bag (it’s sewn into, and stores inside, the seat!), and I love that I could keep necessities close-at-hand rather than have to fish for them in the diaper bag.
There is also a food tray that can be purchased separately. It fits over the arms instead of around them (as some other models do), protecting the rubber clamps from food spills.
It’s travel-friendly, at just 4.2 pounds, and the case will hold both the chair and the food tray.

Chicco Caddy Hook On High Chair
Biggest pro: with a backrest measuring 25.25 inches high, it provides the most back support for baby. Translation = most comfortable. And, it’s Chicco.
It doesn’t surprise me that Chicco made the list. We use so many of their products – I’d recommend their strollers and car seats to literally anyone. I love and trust the brand so much. And so do other consumers. Their hook on high chair is rated over 4.5 stars on most review sites.
Designed for babies up to 37 pounds, its’ 3-point harness meets safety standards. It also features non-slip rubber clamps with a twist-to-tighten feature to make attachment points extra tight.
It fits table-tops between 0.75 and 2.5” thick, though it will go over tables with skirts up to 5.25,” and its’ fabric cover is removable for cleaning (though the label only recommends spot cleaning).
Note that, while it is portable, this model is the least travel-friendly. It’s heavier than most, at 7.5 pounds. And while it does fold flat for easy storage and transport, it does not include a carrying case. So, I’d recommend this primarily for at-home use, particularly if you’re interested in a hook-on for space-saving reasons.

Chicco 360° Rotating Hook On Booster Chair
Biggest pro: most versatile positioning for baby – i.e. it ROTATES!
This one is kinda cool. All the features of the Chicco’s hook on, with the added awesomeness of 360° rotation. Say what?!? It receives consistent 4-star ratings across review sites.
Not only can you face baby toward the table, you can turn him to face you for easier spoon-feeding. GENIUS. This one also has the most extras included – both a snap-on tray and a carry case are included.
Also designed for babies up to 37 pounds, it has a 3-point harness and rubber grips, with a clamp and “ratchet” feature to secure it extra tight to table tops.
To accommodate the tray and rotation features, the chair has more nooks and crannies than others. That means more hard-to-clean places for food to fall. The tray is dishwasher safe, but the fabric is only recommended for handwashing.
While both the tray and chair fold into the included carrying case to become travel-friendly, with all its’ extras, this chair weighs the most, at a whopping ~10 pounds.
